LOVED the color works challenge winners. They were all incredible! I would have liked to see bigger photos of all of these projects. The photos only showed a portion of each one.

This issue seemed to be overwhelmingly bead weaving projects, though, which is not my area of interest. Usually there is a more even mix. I'm guessing this is a sign of where things are headed with the merge to Beadwork. One or two token stringing or wire projects with a vast majority of bead weaving. None for me, thanks.

I have new information about the merger between step by step beads and beadwork. I emailed the editor of beadwork to find out if they would be accepting stringing and/or wire project submissions in Beadwork now that they were merging with SBSB. She emailed back that Beadwork will continue to focus on bead weaving and seed beads, but will NOT HAVE ANY stringing or wirework projects at all.

So, beadweavers rejoice--your magazine is not changing. Stringing, wireworkers, and multi media people--we get nothing.

So the whole hype about "merging" is totally PR spin. There is no merger as far as I can tell--SBSB is just going out of business and Beadwork will remain a bead weaving only publication.

Now readers will get the best of both worlds without having to make a choice between two magazines - Step by Step Beads magazine is being merged into Beadwork magazine!

PLUS, on top of doubling the value you receive, starting with the Apr/May 2010 issue, here are the exciting new features you can expect in every issue of Beadwork!

Stitch Pro: A starting place for beginners that teaches a common stitch, while offering beaders of all levels an in-depth exploration of the stitch. Discover tips from editors, other well known designers, and readers.

Simply Seeds: A spotlighted project 100% made with seed beads, from clasp to the body of the project.

Bead Artist: Expanded to include profiles of both bead artisans and beadweaving artists.

Project ratings: A graphic that rates a project’s required time commitment level on a 1-to-3 scale.

Please be advised that Step by Step Beads magazine will cease publication after the Jan/Feb 2010 issue. Current subscribers can look forward to receiving Beadwork magazine for the remainder of their subscription. If you already have a subscription to Beadwork magazine your current subscription will be extended. If you have any questions or concerns please contact our customer service center at (800) 448-0865 for further assistance.

Roughly when does the issue come??

I'm anxiously awaiting my first issue of my subscription for step by step beads.. and i just have a question.. particularly for any canadian subscribers i guess.. being as ours are mailed from toronto i gather..
* Look for "diagonally drilled", "corner drilled" or "diamond shaped" square or diamond beads.

* Beads should be flat, not cubes.

* Beads need to be drilled at the corners in order to work the pattern.

* Common materials for this type of shape are gemstones, shell, and pearls. Some glass, but not as much.

* Watch the bead size -- 10-12mm or so

Here are some photos I found online, so you can get an idea of what kinds of beads to look for (this is not a shopping recommendation--I don't have any personal connection to these companies):

Lava stone beads, 10mm diagonal drill square shape:
http://www.beadaholic.co.nz/shop/Beads/Semi-precious+%26+Natural/Lava+Stone/Lava+Stone+beads-+40cm+strand-+10mm+diagonal+drill+square+shape.html

Pearl shell, flat square diagonally drilled:
http://www.firemountaingems.com/details.asp?PN=H204344NB

Millefiori glass diamond beads
http://www.blueboxjewellery.com/epages/Store3_Shop2429.sf/en_GB/?ViewObjectID=643090

The point is well taken and recognized. We show the photos as we do to make it easy to see how to make the piece--that's why everything is styled and spread out.

And, using models can be tricky--will a certain age or type of model be off-putting to anyone?

Solution idea: Show pieces on a jewelry display form that simulates a neckline, in a small photo solely meant for showing the real deal in real life.

I look forward to hearing replies to this!

Quite a challenge to choose just one winner, to be announced in June. That beader will win a copy of Margie Deeb's latest book, The Beader's Color Palette. So stay tuned! We may even feature some of the runners-up in a special section of Step by Step Beads!

Somewhere along the line we called them tertiary colors, and apologize--technically the tertiary triad would be slightly off from the triad we request in this contest, more like blue-green than green.

But the triad in this contest is indeed orange-purple-green, and any shade of those hues counts, as long as they lean towards those colors.

They tell me our photos are really tempting, and that our resource listings enable them to find the same materials our designers used, so readers can reproduce exactly what they see.

However, I also have quite a few bead buddies who tell me they look at our art photos and glance through the steps, but ultimately our projects spark a jumping off place to make their own version of a project.

Is this a skill level decision? It makes sense that if I was learning anew, I may not want to make too many choices and would prefer to have the design dictated so I can focus on technique. On the other hand, if I already understand the basics of a technique, I will very likely put a spin on the design.

Do you look to Step by Step Beads more for education or inspiration?

Firstly - England is not a Celtic country (although I will add that there is one English county, Kernow aka Cornwall, which has Celtic heritage).

Secondly - the Union Jack is not the English flag as the article implies in its title, it is the flag of the UK, which is made up of Great Britain (which comprises England, Scotland & Wales) & Northern Ireland.

The English flag is the St George's Cross, clearly seen as one component of the Union Jack

Thirdly, the St Andrew's Flag - the Scottish Flag- is not teal as the colour key indicates, it is a most definite blue (although in the photo of the completed cuff it does indeed look blue).

Also, in case anyone is interested the green/white/orange flag is that of Southern Ireland aka Eire, which is not part of the UK, although it is Celtic. How confusing is all this

I am sure you will appreciate we are all proud of our own heritage & mine is not Celtic!

Best regards
